Current tools like MALDI-TOF or traditional antimicrobial susceptibility tests require separate workflows – one for identifying bacteria and another for determining antibiotic susceptibility. This leads to delays when every hour matters. In our latest scientific publication, we build on our single-cell diagnostic approach that does both simultaneously!
By combining graphene-based nanomotion sensing with machine learning, we can identify pathogens and detect antibiotic resistance within just a few hours. Our models differentiated E. coli, S. aureus, and K. pneumoniae with near 90% accuracy, and detected resistant vs. susceptible E. coli to meropenem antibiotic with more than >97% accuracy.

With MelodyOne, it can be determined within a few hours which antibiotic is truly effective, compared to a typical two to three days. The device measures the vibrations of living bacteria on an ultra-thin carbon layer, immediately revealing whether an antibiotic is effective. This represents a significant step forward in faster and more targeted diagnostics, and in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

The jury praised the project’s innovation, collaboration, and scalability. Thanks to the grant, we can expand the pilot program to more patient samples and extend the testing period.

On initiative of HERA, the first Industry Days were organised in Brussels. Meant to bring together industry and healthcare organisations, the focus these days laid on preparedness to face upcoming healthcare challenges. These include organising efficient ways of managing sufficient stock, means for logistics, and manufacturing capabilities within Europe.

SoundCell was honoured with an invitation to participate in a panel discussion on scaling diagnostics in European context, and we contributed to the Side Session on Advancing diagnostics: scaling production, overcoming industry challenges, and addressing future needs in crises during our first HERA Industry Days. Together with representatives from Nostics, Ginkgobioworks, and Charité Berlin, we discussed topics such as the need for a diagnostics manufacturing capability as well as a network for early detection of upcoming emergencies.

The need for mutual trust and collaboration within Europe was raised and SoundCell was bringing forward the quality of European high-tech industry and the need for investments into shared facilities allowing not only for capital-intensive R&D, but also scaling of emerging technologies.

Overall, the days were a great source of new insights sparked by the discussions and frequent Q&A sessions with the public. We found the days engaging and highly relevant, and are looking forward to the next edition!

What is the Creative Destruction Lab?

The Creative Destruction Lab, or CDL in short, is a startup mentorship programme originating from the Toronto University of Business. In the last years it has expanded worldwide and started topical streams in major cities across the globe. In particular, the Berlin stream is oriented on the topic of healthcare and forms a perfect fit with SoundCell’s work.

Throughout the six month program, CDL Berlin supports early-stage healthcare startups by providing a structured, objectives-based mentorship program. It connects founders with a curated group of accomplished entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors who help them sharpen business models, validate technical roadmaps, and accelerate commercialization. The program focuses on scalable innovations in areas such as digital health, diagnostics, therapeutics, and medical devices.

What is next?

Once each year, CDL organizes a supersession hosted in Toronto, where graduates from across the globe come together to a grand finale to network and share the fruits of the efforts put into the programme. SoundCell will be participating in this year’s supersession that is taking place on the 24^th and 25^th of June.

SoundCell B.V. has officially launched its first trials in hospitals at Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center (RHMDC, Delft) and Erasmus Medical Centre (Erasmus MC, Rotterdam). This marks a major milestone in the validation of its groundbreaking nanotechnology-based diagnostic device, which has the potential to revolutionize antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) and combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 

Faster and More Accurate Diagnosis to Combat AMR

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health crisis, causing an estimated 4.8 million deaths annually. Delays in identifying the correct antibiotic treatment significantly impact patient outcomes, especially for severe bloodstream infections such as sepsis. Current diagnostic methods can take anywhere from 24 hours to several days, leaving clinicians without crucial data for timely treatment decisions.

SoundCell’s innovative approach uses nanomechanical vibrations of graphene membranes to detect bacterial viability within just one hour—a drastic improvement over traditional AST methods. The device measures real-time bacterial motion changes in response to antibiotics, allowing clinicians to determine drug efficacy without waiting for bacterial cultures to grow.

Clinical Validation at Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Center and Erasmus Medical Centre

The trial at RHMDC is focused on bloodstream infections, particularly those caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) two of the most common and clinically relevant bacteria. Pilot testing at Eramus Medical Centre targets yeast infections. The device’s performance will be compared against standard hospital diagnostic tools such as the BD Phoenix Automated Microbiology System and Vitek2 (BioMérieux®).

MelodyOne at the Reinier Haga Medical Diagnostic Centre

For the duration of the study:

 The SoundCell system will not be used for patient diagnosis but solely for scientific validation.

 Clinical microbiologists at hospital will operate the device, with ongoing technical support from SoundCell.

 On days without naturally occurring bloodstream infections, stored clinical isolates will be tested to ensure continuous data collection.

Key Objectives and Impact

Over the next 12 months, SoundCell and collaborating hospitals will:

1. Optimize sample preparation for positive blood cultures.
2. Validate SoundCell’s technology against a large collection of clinical isolates.
3. Benchmark the technology’s speed, sensitivity, and accuracy compared to existing diagnostic methods.

The ultimate goal is to accelerate availability of SoundCell’s fully automated AST device. By integrating direct feedback from clinical microbiologists, SoundCell aims to refine its product to seamlessly fit into current hospital workflows. A faster, more reliable diagnostic tool will improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital stays, and lower healthcare costs.

 A New Era in Infectious Disease Diagnostics

This trial represents one of the first real-world clinical validations of graphene-based biosensors in hospital microbiology labs. When successful, the SoundCell technology could set a new standard for rapid AST and become a critical weapon in the fight against drug-resistant infections. This groundbreaking trial is made possible with the support of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition Grant, which is helping us bring our next-generation technology from the lab to real-world hospital settings.
